When you need one
What a crown fixes
Cracked teeth
A crown holds the tooth together so a crack doesn't spread and split it.
Large old fillings
When there's more filling than tooth left, a crown takes over the chewing.
After a root canal
Treated teeth turn brittle. On back teeth, a crown protects the root canal work you just paid for.
Worn or ground teeth
Years of grinding flatten enamel. A crown rebuilds the tooth's height, shape, and bite.
On an implant
The visible tooth on an implant is a crown, matched to the teeth beside it.

What to expect
Getting a crown, step by step
Exam & X-ray: confirm a crown is the right fix and exactly what it will cost.
Shape & scan: numb the tooth, shape it, take a digital impression. You leave with a temporary.
The lab builds it: a porcelain crown color-matched to your teeth. About two to three weeks.
Final fit: we cement it, check your bite, done.
How long? Two visits, about two to three weeks apart. Each visit takes about an hour.

Crowns FAQ
How much does a crown cost in Redlands?
It depends on the material and which tooth it's for. Most PPO plans cover a share once your deductible is met, and we check your benefits first, so you know your exact out-of-pocket before you commit to anything. No insurance? In-house payment plans and Cherry financing split it into monthly payments.
How many visits does a crown take?
Two, about two to three weeks apart. First visit: numb, shape, scan, and fit a temporary. Second visit: cement the final crown and check your bite.
Does getting a crown hurt?
No. The tooth is numbed the whole time, and most patients say it feels like getting a large filling. Mild tenderness for a day or two after is normal and fades on its own.
Will my crown look natural?
Yes. Porcelain crowns are color-matched to the teeth next to them, so most people can't pick out which tooth has one.
How long do crowns last?
Ten to fifteen years is typical, longer with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups. Grinding shortens that, so tell us if you grind and we'll talk about a night guard.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Usually on back teeth: a treated tooth is more brittle, and a crown keeps it from cracking under chewing pressure. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling. More on root canals →
Crown or pull the tooth?
If a tooth can be saved, saving it is almost always cheaper long term: an extraction usually leads to a bridge or implant later, which costs more than a crown. If the tooth truly can't be saved, we'll tell you straight and go over options. Our oral surgeon handles extractions and implants in the same office.
What if my temporary crown comes off?
Call us at (909) 793-1595 and we'll get it re-cemented at the soonest opening. Until then, chew on the other side and skip gum, caramel, and anything sticky.
