Signs the nerve is involved

  • Pain that lingers after something hot or cold, instead of fading
  • A deep ache that wakes you up at night
  • Sharp pain when you bite down on that tooth
  • A tooth that's gone gray or darker than its neighbors
  • A swollen, tender gum or a small bump near the tooth
  • Nothing at all: some infected nerves are silent and show up on an X-ray first

Pain that comes and goes with sweets may just be a cavity. See fillings →

The X-ray shows whether the nerve is infected or whether a filling will do. You see the image with us and hear which one it is.*

Straight talk

The root canal isn't the pain. It's the fix.

Nobody dreads a filling the way they dread this, and the reason is a mix-up. What people remember hurting is the infected tooth that sent them in: the throbbing, the sleepless night, the side of the face they couldn't chew on. The procedure is what ends that, and most patients walk out feeling better than they walked in.

The tooth is thoroughly numbed before anything starts. You'll feel pressure and hear some sounds, and that's it. Plenty of our patients tell us afterward that it was easier than the filling they were expecting.

What to expect

Your root canal, step by step

X-ray & numb

We confirm the nerve is the problem, show you the image, and numb the tooth completely before anything begins.

Clean it out

The infected tissue inside the canals is removed and the space is disinfected. This is the part that stops the pain.

Seal it

The canals are filled so bacteria can't move back in, and the tooth gets a temporary filling on top.

Crown it

A treated tooth turns brittle, so a crown goes on to keep it from cracking. Planned as part of the treatment, not sprung on you later.

Afterward: tender for a day or two, over-the-counter pain relief is usually plenty, and go easy on that side until the crown is on.

The real choice

Save it, pull it, or wait

Root canal

Keeps your own root, your bite, and the bone around it. Over ten years it usually costs less than removing and replacing the tooth.

Extraction

The right call when the tooth is cracked below the gumline or too far gone to rebuild. Then you're choosing an implant or a bridge to fill the space.

Waiting

The option that costs the most. Infection inside a tooth doesn't clear up on its own: it spreads into the bone, and eventually the tooth is past saving.

Questions

Root canal FAQ

It depends on the tooth: a front tooth has one canal, a back molar can have three or four, so molars cost more. The crown that goes on afterward is quoted separately. Most PPO plans cover a share of both, and we accept Medi-Cal and IEHP. We verify your benefits so you see your number before treatment starts. Call (909) 793-1595.
