When you need one

Signs of gum disease

Bleeding gums

Blood in the sink when you brush or floss is the earliest, and most ignored, sign.

Deep pockets

We measure the space between gum and tooth. Four millimeters or more is where trouble starts.

Receding gums

Teeth looking longer, or new sensitivity at the gumline, means the gum is pulling back.

Persistent bad breath

Bacteria below the gumline cause breath that brushing doesn't fix.

Bone loss on X-ray

The stage you can't feel, and the one we catch on your X-rays before you do.

Years since a cleaning

Long gaps let tartar build below the gumline, where nothing in the mirror shows it.

Why we can't just do a regular cleaning

A regular cleaning works above the gumline. When gums are infected (periodontal disease, in clinical terms), the tartar and bacteria doing the damage sit below it, in pockets around the roots of your teeth. Polishing the tops while infection sits underneath would treat the part that was never the problem.

So we don't do that. We numb the area, clean the roots quadrant by quadrant, and you approve the cost, and what your insurance covers, before anything starts.

What to expect

Your deep cleaning, step by step

Measure & review: gum pockets charted, X-rays on the screen in front of you.

Numb the area: nothing starts until you're comfortable.

Scale & root plane: tartar off the roots, surfaces smoothed so gums can reattach.

Recheck & maintain: we re-measure in a few weeks, then keep you on a cleaning every 3–4 months.

How long? Usually two visits, half the mouth each, about an hour per visit.

Questions

Deep cleaning FAQ

How much does a deep cleaning cost in Redlands?

It depends on how many quadrants of your mouth need it. You're quoted per quadrant after your exam and gum measurements, so you only pay for areas that actually need treating. Most PPO plans cover a share once gum disease is documented; we verify your benefits and tell you your out-of-pocket before we start. Medi-Cal and IEHP accepted; in-house payment plans and Cherry financing if you're paying yourself. Call (909) 793-1595 for your per-quadrant fee.

Why can't I just get a regular cleaning?

A regular cleaning works above the gumline. Deep cleaning treats infection below it, where the damage happens. Cleaning only the visible part of the tooth would leave the disease untouched, which is why we won't sell you that.

Another office told me I need a deep cleaning. Can you check?

Yes. Bring their X-rays, or we'll take our own as part of the $69 exam. We chart your gum pockets, put the numbers and images in front of you, and if a basic cleaning is genuinely enough, that's what we'll tell you.

Does a deep cleaning hurt?

The area is numbed first, and most people feel pressure, not pain. Gums may be tender for a few days afterward; warm salt-water rinses and over-the-counter pain relief handle it.

How many visits does it take?

Usually two, half the mouth each visit, about an hour per visit. Lighter cases sometimes finish in one; heavier ones take four.

How do I know if I need one?

Gum measurements and X-rays, not a sales pitch: pockets of four millimeters or more, bleeding on probing, or bone loss on the X-ray. We show you all three and you see what we see.

What happens if I skip it?

The infection keeps working below the gumline. Early gum disease is reversible; once it advances, bone that's lost doesn't grow back, and teeth loosen. The earlier it's treated, the simpler and cheaper the treatment. That's the honest whole of it.

What happens afterward?

We re-measure your gums a few weeks later; pockets typically shrink and bleeding stops. Then you stay on a maintenance cleaning every 3 to 4 months to keep bacteria from recolonizing below the gumline.

Is a deep cleaning the same as gum surgery?

No. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is non-surgical. If pockets don't respond after treatment, we'll go over next steps with you before anything else happens.

Do you take my insurance?

Most PPO plans cover scaling and root planing once gum disease is documented, plus we accept Medi-Cal and IEHP. We verify your benefits first. Insurance details →
